We use a billboard – the symbol of the modern age consumption – and change it into an object of consideration, reflection and a deep insight into ourselves and the surrounding reality.

Billboard workshops

Billboard workshops, organised by the artists from the Toruń Rusz Gallery, Joanna Górska and Rafał Góralski, were a response to young people’s need to speak freely in the public space. The public space is dominated by all kinds of advertising and commercial communications. We are all recipients. Children and teenagers, however, are particularly susceptible to their influence. There is no place for teenagers in the public space to express their views in all matters that affect them. Owing to the workshops, the teenagers learned about perception and constructing visual communications. They also familiarised themselves with contemporary concepts of socially engaged art.

The workshops were conducted by the artists from Toruń – Joanna Górska and Rafał Góralski. They helped children create works that expressed their view of reality and were communications they wanted to share with the rest of society. The workshops were held in October 2012. The teenagers from the John Paul II Middle School in Obrowo and the Middle School No. 3 in Toruń took part in them. The best works were selected and exhibited in November 2012 on advert columns within the Old Town in Toruń and on the banner in front of the school in Obrowo.
