We use a billboard – the symbol of the modern age consumption – and change it into an object of consideration, reflection and a deep insight into ourselves and the surrounding reality.

2019

The artists from Galeria Rusz from Toruń set out on their journey across the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship for the sixth time. The mobile exhibition tour took place between 2-7 June 2019. Mobile billboards presented 10 unique works that visited some cities and towns of our region – Bydgoszcz, Mrocza, Tuchola, Koronowo, Solec Kujawski and Toruń. This year the exhibition was titled „SLOW DOWN/FREE here” (zWOLNIj tutaj). Joanna Górska and Rafał Góralski concentrated on every person’s need of freedom. Freedom taken away by the contemporary haste. Our life is moving at an ever-increasing rate. We try to keep up with rapidly changing fashion, trends and technologies. We are rushing through the world, tired and overwhelmed with a huge wave of stimuli that affect us and our daily lives. This haste makes us stop wondering what we are chasing in life and what goal we want to achieve. Only slowing down can make us free as we have time to think what is and what is not really important to us, and what we expect from life. The possibility to make choices and a sense of control over our lives make us feel free. Striving for freedom is one of must-haves of contemporary people. So, to be, we need to start with slowing down, and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region is a perfect place to do this! This is a charming region, rooted in the idea of slow life, filled with beautiful nature, with rich and diverse cultural traditions. A perfect place to stop at least for a while in this rushing world and feel free.

The exhibition was accompanied by the workshops titled “A Free Person?” We let the youngest inhabitants of the region take the floor. The participants of this event wrote their answers to the question: “What does it mean to be a free person?” on a mobile billboard. Children showed their intelligence and creativity by using simple words to convey important things. In their opinion, a free person is someone who: lives a full life, has rights and obligations, makes his/her dreams come true, can decide about himself/herself, has his/her own opinion, makes his/her own choices, is himself/herself, can learn, can love, and is happy.
