We use a billboard – the symbol of the modern age consumption – and change it into an object of consideration, reflection and a deep insight into ourselves and the surrounding reality.

Our Heritage

“Our Heritage” is a unique exhibition of works by Joanna Górska and Rafał Góralski, organised in 2017 in Krakow and along the main roads of the country. The works were presented as billboards and citylights (placed at bus stops) along with large-format Motorway billboards displayed from May to June on access roads from Bydgoszcz, Inowrocław, Warsaw and Łódź. In Krakow they were presented on billboards and citylights at various places around the city in July and August.

The artists were inspired by the 20th anniversary of the listing of the Medieval Town of Toruń as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Toruń is one of four Polish cities (Krakow, Warsaw and Zamość) that can pride itself on this honourable distinction. UNESCO heritage are treasures of mankind that have been left by previous generations and that we’re protecting now. The question to ask is: what treasures will we, contemporary people, leave for future generations? And what will they appreciate us for? – Rafał Góralski comments on the project. – We need to realise that our activities have consequences – we’ll leave either something valuable and beautiful, or something worthless. It’s up to us. The main presentation of the works was held in the city space of Krakow, as the artists wanted to symbolically connect these two cities. They are both listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are similar to each other with regard to Gothic architecture. Due to similar building substance, Toruń is sometimes called “Krakow of the North” or “Little Krakow” – Joanna Górska told us. – This way we wanted to send the inhabitants of Krakow greetings from the northern end of Poland and invite them to visit our city.

The project was held under the honorary patronage of Michał Zaleski, President of Toruń
The project has been co-funded by the Toruń Municipality.
